Conditions Report: Golden is getting hammered

After a brief respite, the Golden area is back in a storm cycle reminiscent of the heavy winters we haven't seen in years. Recent data from Avalanche Canada confirms this shift, with the latest forecasts showing continued strong westerly flow delivering widespread precipitation through the weekend—potentially adding another 30-50 cm of snow at treeline elevations in the Golden area over the next 48 hours. Combined with the current storm that's already piled up nearly half a meter across most treeline zones in just the past few days, avalanche danger remains considerable HIGH in many alpine and treeline areas, with heightened concerns for wind slabs and poor visibility complicating travel.
Given the high risk across the region, we opted for a conservative tour in sheltered backcountry spots near Golden, sticking to low-angle terrain below treeline to avoid the beefier problems up high. The payoff? Absolutely stellar riding—deep, blower powder stashed in the trees, with that fresh, untracked feel that's got everyone buzzing ahead of the resort openings. Speaking of which, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is set to fire up this Friday, December 12, promising epic early-season lines on their renowned chutes and bowls once the storm settles.
